A great trip to the Swain Reefs usually means great weather and a variety of fish to catch. Our two March trips were no different.
Our first March trip was with the Adreno spearfishing group from Brisbane. We had a first time catch and biggest catch of the trip recorded by Ged with his 8kg Spanish Mackerel. There were plenty of the usual suspects in this trip like the Red Emperor, a few different species of Coral Trout, and Snapper. There was also one unusual catch that made an appearance – the Sailfin Snapper.
We headed out to the Swain Reefs with a group of 13 from Ipswich. We had a solid week of fishing despite the terrible weather that endured for the entire trip. The most notable catches of the week were an 18.6kg Spanish Mackerel caught by Reese Fray and a 25kg Giant Trevally Caught by Alex. The Fray boys also recorded the most catches for the week! Some of the species caught included Camouflage Grouper, Flowery Rock Cod, Maori Rock Cod, some varieties of Rock Cod and Red Emperor, Chinaman Fish (no take), Hussar and Spanish Mackerel.
Our last trip for March was with a group of 18 from near Dubbo, NSW. We chartered to the Swain Reefs again and were lucky to have some better weather this time round. There were a few first time catches of the Cobia, Blue Moari Cod and Spanish Mackerel. The biggest catches included an 8kg, 1.4m Spanish Mackerel caught by Parish, and a 1.1m Cobia caught by Zac McManus weighing in at 7kgs.
